The picture doesn’t look peculiar at all. Just a totally regular guy reading the paper and having a drink. Sitting upright in his seat, fully conscious and alert. Dressed normally, no weird hair. Is someone going to take a picture of me on the train reading a book in the morning and put it up here with the caption “Reading a book!” next?

(I will admit, however, I never understood why people feel like they have to have the big 24 ouncers on the train, but that’s what everyone brings for some reason…)

Turns out, it’s illegal to have an open container (alcohol) in public in IL.

And to answer your question, “Is someone going to take a picture of me on the train reading a book”, we have no idea what you look like. Send us a picture and we can better answer that for you.

On Metra, the commuter rail in Chicago, its totally legal and acceptable to drink on the train. I’ve seen little groups of people bring cases of beer to drink on the ride home.

I think it was legal to drink and ride the Long Island Railroad in the 70s. I may have a false memory of them selling beer on the train though.

I know that you can have alcohol on Amcrash, I mean Amtrak. I’ve actually had a beer on a ride from DC to NYC.
I don’t know if this is considered a public place as you must pay to be on the system.
On the NYC subway, it is illegal to drink alcohol… of course, I’ve seen too many violations of that to make it almost laughable.

This photo was not taken on the metra though. It was taken on the CTA, where open alcoholic beverages are illegal, DUH.
